Happy New Year, and welcome to the very first edition of Ride, Tri and Thrive!

The start of a new year can feel like a mix of two worlds colliding. On the one hand, it’s mid-season for many cyclists and triathletes—a time to build momentum, refine your skills, and finish strong. On the other hand, it’s a time of reflection, dreaming, and setting goals for the months ahead. These two ideas might seem at odds, but they’re two sides of the same coin.

Let’s explore how embracing both perspectives can help you thrive.

    Building Momentum: Finish Strong

If you’re in the middle of your season, now is the time to focus on what matters most:

    • Refining Key Skills: Whether it’s dialling in your transitions, climbing with more confidence, or maintaining consistent pacing, the little details add up.
    • Staying Consistent: Even a few well-executed weekly sessions can keep your momentum strong.
    • Enjoying the Process: Celebrate your progress. It’s not just about hitting PRs—it’s about appreciating how far you’ve come.

Momentum is about honouring the work you’ve already done while staying present in the moment.

Setting the Stage for What’s Next

The New Year also invites you to dream big. But instead of focusing on traditional resolutions—which often fail because they’re too rigid—why not set intentions that align with what you value most?

For example, instead of saying, “I want to be faster this year,” you might try, “I’ll dedicate one session per week to improving my climbing.” Focusing on the journey rather than the outcome makes you more likely to stay consistent and enjoy the process.

Here’s how to create meaningful goals:

    1. Be Specific. What exactly do you want to achieve, and why does it matter?
    2. Break It Down. What small steps can you take today to get closer to your goal?
    3. Make It Meaningful. Choose goals that excite you and bring value to your life.

Mindset Matters: Thriving in Life and Sport

As a mindset coach, I see first hand how the lessons we learn in sports translate to life. Discipline, resilience, and the ability to embrace challenges are skills that can enrich every area of your life.

Consider: How can you bring the same focus and intention you use in training to your career, relationships, or personal growth? When you thrive beyond sport, your athletic journey is even more rewarding.

    Your Journey Starts Now

So, what’s your focus this January? Are you building momentum to finish strong, dreaming big for the year ahead, or working to bring it all together? Whatever your path, remember: the journey makes the destination meaningful.

Here’s to riding, tri-ing, and thriving in sport and life. I’d love to hear about your goals, so don’t hesitate to share!

    Cheers,
